The differences are quite significant. They give each of these amps a completely different sound, unique dynamics, and a separate place in history. Their commonalities with the 5F6-A, however, are also quite striking. Given a universe of possible modifications to these circuits, it is enlightening to know where Marshall chose to focus its innovation. The third edition also adds a chapter on the dynamics of the power amp when severely overdriven. Intentionally overdriving a Class AB1 design was unthinkable in the age of Frederick Terman and the Radiotron Designer’s Handbook, so there hasn’t been a lot written on the subject. Guitar players are known for pushing their amps beyond their high-fidelity limits, however, so the effects are important. The treatment here isn’t as exhaustive as in Richard Kuehnel’s Power Amps book, but it is specific to the 5F6-A and its Marshall-inspired offspring. From the Author Marshall circuit modifications did not progress along a straight time line and some parts in later years actually reverted back to their original values. So in generalizing these circuits I remove chronology altogether and examine, from a contemporaneous perspective, how the variations affect amplifier performance.
Note – dates shown are for very rough guidance only – expect transitional overlaps. The beauty of these cones is that because they were produced a little more recently they tend to turn up in better condition than the older pre-rola speakers and are usually a lot cheaper to buy! Most people dismiss these cones as Kurt Muellers because of the cone stamps.

Submit your Guitar How old is my vintage amplifier? There are several ways to determine when a Fender amp was produced. First use the cosmetic features to get a range of possible years. Next, if applicable look for the date code on the tube chart. Remember, many components could have been changed over the years, speakers blow, caps dry out, transformers melt down, and pots wear out.
Here is a cool link to a Vintage Fender Amp price history chart that tracks sales data for specific amp models by the month. Wide panel, narrow panel, brown, blonde, and black face amps have a date code hand-stamped on the tube chart. This code is made up of two letters. The first letter translates to the year and the second to the month.
The reissue amps also made use of this code. Electronic components such as transformers, potentiometers, speakers, and some capacitors are often stampted with a date code indicating who manufactured them and when. The code follows the format:
Last updated December 14, Note: The numbers below are for Hylight and Biacrown Hiwatt amplifiers only! Any serial number that begins with one or more letters was made in the 90s or later, and is not included in this list. Please note also that the speaker cabinet serial numbers used a different progression. Please browse the Registry page for more specific data relating serial numbers to dates.
All Marshall amps originally came with Celestion speakers, so in cases where the speakers are original, speaker date codes can be used to date earlier amps. Marshall cabinets didn’t officially include serial numbers until October As a result, dating cabs can be more art than science.

But the presence control is not part of the tone stack. Instead, it controls the amount of negative feedback in the output stage. With no negative feedback, the output stage tends to overshoot and exaggerate the high midrange and sharp, percussive sounds.

Guitar, bass; tube, solid state. These amps are called solid-state because they use transistors for their preamp and power sections They are very reliable and seldom need repairs. These amps are popular with players looking for a sturdy, reliable touring amp. Most lower cost practice amps are solid state. Most tube amps have separate channels that can switch from clean to distorted tones instantly. Tube performance can deteriorate over time, so tubes need changing occasionally. Modeling amps use digital processors to simulate the sound of old-fashioned tube technology.

Ultimately though — use your own ears and compare. This arrangement continues today. The mark to the aluminum metal panel Marshalls also marks a significant reduction in comparative value between them and the earlier plexi-paneled Marshalls, though basically by late into early , the circuit was essentially the same.
Again, the additional gain from these amplifiers make them desirable for hard rock applications, but the distortion of course still came from both the preamp and power amp stages, creating a rich tone full of warm tube harmonics and of course a wonderful dynamic sense. Plate voltages were reduced during this early metal panel era, resulting in a circuit that was somewhat easier on the power tubes.
These amplifiers are also noted for being slightly brighter in tone then plexi amplifiers, making them sonically more aggressive. This is the opposite case with the first plexi Marshalls which are really tuned to favor PAF-style humbucking pickups that are more tonally balanced. In , the Marshalls made for export to the U. General consensus is that the EL equipped Marshalls were and are thought of more highly, with the added headroom of the not being as desired in the non-master volume Marshalls of the day.
The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code.

It started out as a 1×18 bass cab but has been expertly converted to an awesome guitar cab. Not dried out or dusty in the least like so many that have been exposed to elements over years. Pairing a Telecaster with a Fender is a tradition dating back many years now. The two devices are a perfect match for each other, each bringing out the strengths of the other. From the bass response right up to the high-end, the gorgeous lo-fi tones of your Tele will shine through this amp.
In my experience one can devide the evolution of these amps as follows. Early vs late preamp versions. The later ones have the clipping diods early in the pre amp traditional marshall tone stack and PPVMV. In the early ones the EQ is not as effective and one really has to push it really hard to get it to get shredder gain. The easiest way to tell with version you have is to take out the second tube, the V2 preamp tube in the row of three tubes turn the amp on and if the normal channel disappears its the later version if it is the boost channel its the early one.
Most people likes the later versions more than the early one including me.
